We had the opportunity to check out the historic Rock Castle house while in the Nashville area. This house is over 220 years old and is still in great shape. Built of limestone, you could easily move in now and be comfortable. Ok, no running water or indoor bathroom. Still, a solid built house.
The house was built by the Daniel Smith family. He is responsible for the final survey and naming of the state of Tennessee. Did you know that Tennessee use to be part of North Carolina? I didn’t.
Today, the house sits on approximately 18 acres of the original 3,500 acres of the estate. A large out-building and the family cemetery are still there to walk through. The home is in excellent condition and is filled with period appropriate items. The house was passed down through five generations before it was sold to the state . It is now a nationally registered historic site operated by the Friends of Rock Castle.
If you are like me and like to study the history of our country, this is an enjoyable place to check out. For a small fee ($4.00 each), you can walk through the original home and touch and see what it was really like over 200 years ago.
